The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has affirmed its readiness to conduct rerun elections in certain parts of Enugu State on February 3, as directed by the Appeal Court.
Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, made this announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Enugu in preparation for the upcoming polls.
The rerun elections, mandated by the Appeal Court, pertain to Udenu/Igbo-eze North Federal Constituency and Enugu South Urban State Constituency.
Dr. Chukwu detailed that the elections would encompass 25 Registration Areas, comprising a total of 173 polling units. Specifically, the Enugu South Urban State Constituency will witness a rerun in eight polling units with discrepancies.
For Udenu/Igbo-eze North Federal Constituency, covering Udenu and Igbo-eze North LGAs, the elections will take place in 55 polling units in Udenu LGA and 110 polling units in Igbo-eze North LGA.
He further emphasized that the commission, working within the court’s stipulated 90-day timeframe, has scheduled February 3 for the rerun elections, assuring stakeholders of meticulous preparations for a smooth and inclusive process.
He said: “Working under the order of the court, which specified 90 days for conduct of the rerun elections, the commission has fixed February 3 for the exercise.
“We are prepared and have made necessary arrangements for hitch-free and inclusive rerun elections.
“That is the essence of this important stakeholders’ meeting.
“Presently, we have non-sensitive materials in INEC offices in the various LGAs involved in the exercise.
“The stakeholders will be carried along to unveil and monitor the sensitive materials as they arrive a few hours to the election day through the Central Bank of Nigeria, Enugu branch.”
