INEC Speaks On Operating Registration Centres In Niger Republic

Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has disputed rumours that the commission is operating polling stations in Niger Republic.

According to unsubstantiated social media reports, INEC has began registering voters in several sections of the neighbouring country.

In a Facebook post, Uche Nwabuike claimed that INEC was running illegal registration centres outside of Nigeria.

Oyekanmi refuted the reports while addressing at an ICIR-organized Twitter chat about Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) registration.

While describing the reports as baseless, he said, “By virtue of the provisions of the Constitution, all elections must take place in Nigeria. And to that extent, we cannot register voters or conduct elections in Nigeria.

“This is why Nigerians in the Diaspora cannot vote from abroad,” he said.
