IUO VC Ezemonye, Cautions Young Doctors Against Conflict Of Interest

The Vice Chancellor, Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO), Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, cautioned the newly inducted Medical Doctors of the institution against conflicts of interest as they sojourn in the journey of their profession.

Truth Live News Media reports that a total of 29 persons were inducted into the medical profession by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria MDCN.

He gave the warning at the 20th Oath-taking and Induction ceremony of the newly qualified Medical Doctors from the institution at Okada.

Prof. Ezemonye said besides maintaining competence, they are to treat patients with dignity which is very crucial for their safety and trust.

Ezemonye, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raphael Adeghe, while saying that the theme:”A Doctor and a Fulfilling Life” is very important for the simple reason that doctors have a unique privilege of helping people, solving complex problems and making tangible difference in patients lives, offering deep purpose and gratitude, they should also know that achieving this fulfilment alongside a healthy personal life requires intentional work-life balance through setting boundaries to avoid burnout.

Ezemonye further described the newly qualified doctors as the watchmen over the nation’s health and wellbeing adding that this is because they are among the very privileged hands saddled with the sacred responsibility of ensuring the wellbeing of the nation, as a healthy population leads to increase productivity which significantly impact the overall economic landscape of the country.

Speaking on the topic:”A Doctor and a Fulfilling Life”, the keynote speaker, Dr. Eustace Eromosele Oseghale, chairman, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Edo State chapter, said being fulfilled as a medical doctor is not to be measured in tense of monetary values and gains but the quality of service rendered to patients.

He said doctors must be able to communicate, organize, empathize, demonstrate curiosity, collaborate with other health workers in order to succeed on the job.

Dr. Oseghale, a consultant, ENT Head and Neck Surgeon, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), also urged the inductees to always keep documents of their patients as it will help enhance their jobs save them for unwarranted troubles.

While appealing to the young doctors to stay back and bridge the gap in the health sector, said if perchance they would to leave the country for a greener pastures, they should always remember their country, and invest in it.

On the part of the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Prof. Fatima Kyari, represented by Prof. John Obodo, urged the young doctors to be professional in their chosen field.

She tasked them to stick to the ethics of the medical profession just as she encouraged them to always renew their licenses to be relevant in profession.
