JAMB: 88 Out Of 337 Visually Impaired Candidates Write 2023 UTME In Northwest

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) under Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG) has reportedly said that 88 Visually impaired candidates wrote the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The examination which was conducted at the Bayero University Kano (BUK) Center, on Thursday under the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG) had 337 registered Candidates across Nigeria.

The candidates were given different gadgets including typewriters, braille machines and braille paper for easy examination processes.

This effort which is said to ensure that no eligible Nigerian is denied the opportunity of writing the UTME to obtain higher education regardless of physical challenges was champion by Prof. Oleyede-led administration.

The 88 candidates who wrote the examination free of charge across eleven centres in the country were drawn from the Northern states,

The JAMB Coordinator for Kano Centre, Prof. Yahuza Bello who was reportedly monitoring the exercise at the School of Continuing Education, BUK. Said Kano has the highest number of candidates representing 26.12 per cent of the total physically challenge candidates for this year.

The News Agency of Nigeria NAN, reported that Bello, a former Vice-Chancellor of the Bayero University Kano said that “Since inception in 2017, the JEOG has processed over 3,300 candidates for the UTME.

It said of the 390 candidates, a total of 175 (44.8%) were given admission in 2019. While a total of 110 candidates were admitted in 2021.

According to Bello, reports from universities over the years show that special needs candidates compete favourably with their normal counterparts.
