The former director-general of Labour Party (LP) Presidential campaign, Doyin Okupe has confirmed his release by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday morning.
Okupe who was the director-general of the campaign of the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, resigned after a court found him guilty of money laundering charges last December.
The Labour Party chieftain confirmed his arrest and release in a tweet, where he said, he was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos when he wanted to catch a flight for a medical trip overseas but has been released, adding that the security agents “apologised” to him for “the error”.
Okupe was billed to fly to London via Virgin Atlantic before he was apprehended by the secret agents.
According to a statement made by the Spokesman of DSS, Peter Afunanya, Okupe was intercepted at the instance of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Afunanya also said the LP chieftain has been handed over to the anti-graft agency but the LP chieftain said hours later that he has been freed.
However, the EFCC and the DSS have not commented on the release of the former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
