Vandals have stolen some of the road fittings that were installed on the recently inaugurated Second Niger bridge.
Truthlive news learnt that an inside source from the works ministry that spoke with Punch confirmed the theft on Wednesday, specifying that the expansion joint walkway from axis 330 of the bridge was the missing item.
The source said “Unfortunately, It’s true. The stolen fitting is an element from the expansion joints of the bridge. Drivers on that road have to be careful as the damaged part can cause discomfort to motorists.”
Recall that the Second Niger Bridge was made operational on December 15, 2022, by the Federal Government in an effort to reduce traffic in the South-East over the holiday season.
It was commissioned on May 23 by the former president, Muhammadu Buhari through an online platform, Zoom alongside seven other infrastructural projects.
The 1.6-kilometre-long bridge, linking Anambra and Delta states, aims to alleviate traffic on the existing Niger Bridge, spur economic activity, and connect the South-East with the rest of the country.
