The Kano State Government has successfully identified and removed 239 ghost workers from its payroll.
A total of 1,334 workers are yet to be identified as part of a biometric data capture exercise aimed at cleansing the payroll system.
The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Faruk Ibrahim, stated that efforts are underway to sanitize the system and plug loopholes that allowed for corrupt practices.
The government’s decision to conduct a biometric capture and pay parade was aimed at addressing corruption within the civil service.
The exercise led to the discovery of ghost workers fraudulently inserted into the payroll, according to Umar Idris, chairman of the Local Government Payroll Committee.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed that the names of the ghost workers be deleted from the payroll, aligning with his promise to close loopholes that facilitated corruption.
The removal of ghost workers is expected to save the state government over N27 million monthly, allowing for more effective allocation of resources.
