Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed again on Tuesday, January 27, plunging several parts of the country into darkness and disrupting power supply nationwide.
The latest incident marks the second grid collapse within four days, following a similar system failure recorded last Friday, January 23.
Checks on the website of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that, at the time of the collapse, electricity supply was not allocated to any of the distribution companies (Discos).
Data further indicated that only the Delta Gas Power Plant was operational, generating about 39 megawatts of electricity, while all other grid-connected power plants were offline.
Explaining the incident, NISO said preliminary operational reports revealed that the collapse was triggered by the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330-kilovolt transmission lines, coupled with the disconnection of some generating units connected to the national grid.
