Police operatives in Ebonyi State have arrested two traditional rulers in Amasiri, Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State in connection with the communal crisis between the community and its neighbour, Okporojo, Oso Edda in Edda Local Government Area of the state.
Recall that the crisis led to the beheading of four people by suspected persons last week with houses razed down and other valuable property destroyed while the crisis lasted.
The police also arrested the Coordinator of Amasiri Development Centre, Baron Anya over the crisis.
The arrested monarchs are; HRH Basil Onya Idam of Amasiri autonomous community and HRH Godfrey Oko of Ndukwe kingdom.
The traditional rulers, who were dethroned by Governor Francis Nwifuru on Saturday last week, and the coordinator of Amasiri Development Centre were arrested on Sunday evening.
The state police image maker, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the arrest of the monarchs and the coordinator.
“Yes, we have the traditional rulers and the coordinator in our custody. Ten people were arrested before now.
“The two traditional rulers and the coordinator are in our custody”, he said.
Asked if the traditional rulers and the coordinator were arrested over arms as speculated, Ukandu said “they are in our custody and we are investigating and I can’t say anything further on their arrest”.
Ukandu said the community is now calm following security measures.
“The place is calm now and our men have been patrolling around the area to ensure that everywhere is calm. There is calm in that place now”, he said.
