The United Kingdom government has confirmed that it is actively monitoring Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 presidential election and will deploy observation teams across the country ahead of the polls.
Chris Elmore, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), disclosed this in a written response to a parliamentary question on what support the UK was providing to independent election monitoring ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
“We are closely monitoring preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential elections,” Elmore stated. “Our High Commission in Abuja will, as in previous elections, deploy observation teams across the country, working alongside international partners and Nigerian civil society organisations.”
The minister added that the UK would continue to engage with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and civil society partners to support initiatives aimed at strengthening a credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral process.
The disclosure comes against the backdrop of heightened international attention on Nigeria’s democratic trajectory. Nigeria’s general elections are scheduled for January 2027, with voters set to elect a president and vice president, members of the Senate and House of Representatives, state governors, and state assembly members.
According to a Business Day poll, the economy and cost of living, along with security and safety, are the top concerns for voters ahead of the 2027 election.
The UK’s election monitoring interest is part of a broader engagement with Nigeria. In 2025/26, FCDO bilateral aid to Nigeria rose to £135 million, with a stated focus on strengthening Nigerian institutions and domestically financed development.
INEC has listed the Presidential and House of Assembly election for 16 January 2027, followed by governorship and state house of assembly elections on 6 February 2027.
