Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has mourned the passing of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, calling him an epitome of religious harmony.
The cleric’s son, Saleh Abubakar confirmed his father’s demise at the age of 90.
Recall that the Imam came to limelight for preventing the possible mass killing of 262 Christians in Nghar village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State in June 2018.
In a statement on Friday, Atiku described the late Imam as a remarkable patriot and exemplar of compassion.
Atiku’s words, “Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, whose selfless courage during the June 2018 Plateau crisis saw him open his mosque and home to shelter and protect over 260 Christians, even at great personal risk.
“He lived a life that transcended religious divides and affirmed our shared humanity. His act of bravery not only saved hundreds of lives but also stood as a powerful testament to the truth that peace, empathy and brotherhood are the firmest foundations of national unity.”
Atiku pointed out that, while grieving Imam Abdullahi, the nation must recommit to the ideals he embodied in inter-faith harmony, mutual respect, and an unwavering defence of the sanctity of every human life.
He said the cleric passed away on Thursday night at the Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos.
