The Federal Government on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, unveiled the Sustainable Power And Irrigation For Nigeria Project (SPIN) aimed at improving irrigation systems, strengthening dam safety and boosting food production across the country.
Truth Live News International reports that the project, supported by the World Bank with a financing package of $500m, is designed to enhance Nigeria’s resilience to floods, drought and other climate-related challenges.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony in Abuja on March 10, 2026, the Minister of Water Resources And Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, described the initiative as a strategic intervention to improve water resource management and expand irrigation for agricultural productivity.
According to Utsev, the project will help strengthen dam safety while ensuring that irrigation and hydropower contribute more effectively to national food security, economic growth and environmental sustainability.
He noted that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises food security, economic resilience and infrastructure development.
Utsev also recalled that the President had earlier declared a national emergency on food security in July 2023, stressing the need to transform Nigeria’s agricultural production systems and guarantee reliable access to food for citizens.
Also speaking at the event on March 10, 2026, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Power, Mamman Mahmoud, who represented the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, urged members of the project steering committee to remain committed to the successful implementation of the initiative.
Truth Live News gathered that the $500m World Bank-backed SPIN project is expected to improve irrigation, boost energy generation and strengthen Nigeria’s climate resilience.
The programme targets the development of about 500,000 hectares of irrigated farmland and is projected to generate up to 30 gigawatts of sustainable energy, while enhancing the country’s capacity to manage climate-related risks.
The Federal Government said modernising irrigation infrastructure and improving dam safety would increase agricultural production, create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activities, particularly in rural communities.
