FIFA President Criticises Senegal Protests in AFCON Final

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has criticised what he described as unacceptable behaviour by some Senegalese players, officials and supporters during the Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday.

In a statement sent to AFP on Monday, 19 January 2026, Mr Infantino said it was wrong for players to walk off the pitch in protest following a penalty decision awarded to Morocco during the final.

He said leaving the field of play in that manner undermined the spirit of the game and went against football’s values, adding that such conduct would not be tolerated at major tournaments.

The incident occurred after the referee awarded a penalty to Morocco, prompting protests from Senegal players and members of the technical crew. Television footage showed players briefly leaving the pitch before play eventually resumed.

Despite the disruption, Senegal went on to win the final, securing the continental title after a tense and dramatic match.

African football’s governing body, CAF, has not yet announced whether disciplinary action will be taken, but the incident is expected to be reviewed as part of its post-tournament assessment.

The Africa Cup of Nations is one of the continent’s biggest sporting events and attracts millions of viewers across Africa and beyond. FIFA officials have repeatedly warned that player conduct during high-profile matches must reflect professionalism and respect for match officials.
