A close associate of the former Vice President as well as a former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has officially tendered his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing what he described as the party’s diminishing capacity to offer credible leadership and address Nigeria’s political challenges.

Melaye made his resignation public on Thursday via a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, sharing a signed letter addressed to the PDP chairman in his ward, Ward 1 Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

In the letter, the former lawmaker expressed deep disappointment in the party’s direction, stating: “This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”

Melaye, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2023 Kogi election, said he had “carefully reflected on the state of the party” and could no longer “in good conscience participate in the activities of the parties or lend [his] support to her agenda.”

He added that his resignation was with immediate effect and at all levels of engagement with the PDP.

“Thank you for the opportunity to serve under the platform during my period of membership,” he concluded.

While he has yet to declare a new party affiliation, his exit could impact the PDP’s standing in Kogi and national politics ahead of 2027.
