Mohammed Kasim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged as the winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election, clinching a significant victory in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council polls.
According to results announced after voting on Saturday, February 21, 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, confirmed Kasim as the candidate with the highest number of valid votes cast. The PDP flagbearer secured a clear lead over his closest contender.
Election Results:
Mohammed Kasim (PDP) – 22,165 votes
Yahaya Shehu (APC) – 17,788 votes
APGA Candidate – 1,687 votes
ADC Candidate – 1,366 votes
Kasim’s victory represents a political comeback, overturning the outcome of the 2022 council election in which he finished second. In that contest, the APC’s Jibrin Abubakar won with 11,125 votes, while Kasim polled 9,597 votes.
Determined to reclaim the seat, Kasim returned to the race and significantly increased his support base, more than doubling his previous vote count to 22,165. His win brings an end to the APC’s administration of the council and signals a shift in the political landscape of Gwagwalada Area Council, which had been led by outgoing APC Chairman Abubakar Giri.
