Shehu Sani Condemns ‘Unconscionable’ Threats Against INEC Chairman, Urges Support for Credible Polls

Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has strongly condemned threats, mistrust, and attacks directed at the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, describing such actions as unacceptable ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement posted on his verified X handle on Friday, Sani described the targeting of the INEC chairman as “unconscionable and not the way to go.”

“Threats, mistrusts and casting aspersions on the INEC chairman is unconscionable and not the way to go,” Sani wrote.

He emphasized the need to focus on enabling the electoral body to deliver free, fair, and transparent elections rather than undermining its leadership.

“What is most important is that the Head of the electoral body should be tasked, monitored and supported to conduct credible and transparent elections for the sustenance of our democracy,” he added.

The condemnation comes amid growing controversy surrounding the INEC chairman, including calls by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) for President Bola Tinubu to immediately remove Prof. Amupitan from office.

In response, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Northern States has urged the Shari’ah Council to openly identify any individuals or groups behind the campaign against the INEC boss, warning that religious platforms must not be used as a “cheap cover” to pursue political interests or intimidate public officials.

Sani’s comment shows broader concerns over attempts to politicize or intimidate the electoral umpire in the lead-up to future national polls.
