Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent terrorist attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State, describing the incidents as tragic while assuring Nigerians that the Federal Government will intensify efforts to eliminate insurgent groups operating in the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the President commiserated with the people of Borno over the loss of lives and injuries recorded during the coordinated attacks on military positions in the state. He said the news from Maiduguri was “profoundly upsetting,” adding that he mourns with the families of the victims and stands in solidarity with the people of the state during the difficult period.
“I mourn those who lost their lives, sympathise with the injured, and stand in solidarity with the people of Borno during this challenging time,” the President stated.
President Tinubu described the attacks as desperate acts by terrorists attempting to instil fear among citizens, stressing that the criminals were acting out of desperation as they remain under sustained pressure from Nigerian security forces.
“I want to make it categorically clear that these acts of terror are the final desperate and frantic attempts by criminals and terrorist elements trying to instil and spread fear, as they are under constant pressure from our brave armed forces and security agencies operating in various theatres,” he said.
The President commended the courage and resilience of Nigerian troops and members of the civilian task forces who successfully repelled the assaults on military formations.
“I must commend the courage and fighting spirit of our patriotic troops who successfully repelled the coordinated attacks by these terrorists on military positions in the state,” Tinubu added.
According to him, the attacks carried out on Monday were “desperate acts of evil-minded terrorist groups,” assuring that Nigeria’s military and allied security forces would intensify operations to decisively crush the insurgents.
The President also disclosed that he recently approved additional equipment and operational support for security agencies following a high-level meeting with heads of security and intelligence agencies held last weekend.
“During a security meeting with leaders of security and intelligence agencies, I approved additional equipment and operational support to enhance their capabilities, and this effort is already in progress,” he said.
As part of the immediate response to the situation, Tinubu revealed that he had directed security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to coordinate security operations on ground, while also instructing emergency response agencies to ensure that victims receive adequate medical attention.
“I have directed security chiefs to move to Maiduguri to take charge of the situation, and I have also directed the emergency agencies to provide proper care for the injured,” the President stated.
Reaffirming his administration’s resolve to defeat insurgency, Tinubu declared that no part of Nigeria would be safe for terrorists, insisting that the country would not bow to intimidation or fear.
“There is no place in Nigeria where terrorists will find safety. We will locate them, confront them, and completely defeat them. Nigeria will not succumb to fear,” the President declared.
