A horrific mass shooting struck Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday evening during a large “Chanukah by the Sea” celebration, leaving multiple people dead and many more wounded, authorities and eyewitnesses say.

The incident occurred around 6:45–7:00 p.m. local time (AEDT) on the first night of Hanukkah, when hundreds, possibly thousands, of Jewish community members and beachgoers were gathered for the holiday event.

According to the New South Wales Police Force, two individuals were involved and have been neutralised or taken into custody following an intense police response. One of the suspected attackers was killed at the scene, and the second was injured and arrested, police confirmed. Officers quickly cordoned off the area and urged the public to avoid Bondi Beach and take shelter as emergency crews dealt with the situation.

Authorities have declared the attack a terrorist incident, stating that it was aimed at Sydney’s Jewish community. National leaders, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns, condemned the violence as an “evil” and “deeply distressing” act of hate, vowing support for victims and a full investigation into motives and planning.

Reports from Australian Media indicate at least 11–12 people killed, including victims and one perpetrator. Also, at least 29 people wounded, among them two police officers, with many transported to hospitals across the Sydney area. Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scenes of panic and people fleeing as gunfire echoed. Emergency services deployed dozens of ambulances, helicopters, and specialist units.

Footage and accounts from the scene depict harrowing moments as attendees sought cover and tried to help others while first responders worked to save lives. Police continue to maintain a secure perimeter and are urging anyone with information or footage to come forward.

Jewish community leaders and organizations have expressed profound grief, emphasizing the attack’s impact on families and the wider Australian Jewish community. Leaders of other faith and civic groups have also condemned the violence and called for unity and support for the injured and bereaved.

As the situation unfolds, authorities have reiterated that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts focused on understanding the motive, reviewing possible links to broader extremist activity, and providing support to survivors and families.
