CALABAR – The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State Council, has celebrated Eyoawan Bassey Otu on her 62nd birthday anniversary.

The Union described the First Lady as a symbol of compassion, dedicated service, and sustained humanitarian excellence across Cross River communities and vulnerable populations.

In a goodwill message, Council Chairman, Archibong Bassey, congratulated the governor’s wife for attaining the milestone age with remarkable public service records.

Bassey noted that Otu’s life trajectory reflects consistent commitment to uplifting disadvantaged groups through strategic interventions that target poverty, healthcare access, and social inclusion initiatives.

The statement emphasized that her humanitarian engagements have steadily positioned her as a central figure in advancing social welfare policies within Cross River State.

The Union particularly highlighted her flagship initiative, Humanity Without Borders, describing it as impactful across multiple vulnerable population segments in the state.

According to the Union, the project has delivered measurable outcomes in health outreach programmes, women empowerment schemes, and direct social support services for underserved residents.

It added that beneficiaries across rural and urban communities have continued to testify to the project’s effectiveness in addressing pressing socioeconomic challenges in the state.

Bassey stated that the NUJ, as a professional media body, has consistently monitored, documented, and reported the First Lady’s interventions across various platforms.

He explained that such media coverage ensures transparency while amplifying the reach and public awareness of her humanitarian contributions across the state.

The NUJ chairman further observed that Otu’s initiatives have aligned with broader government policies focused on improving citizens’ welfare and strengthening community resilience mechanisms.

He stressed that her programmes complement state-led efforts in healthcare delivery, poverty alleviation, and grassroots development strategies across Cross River’s three senatorial districts.

The Union maintained that the First Lady’s work reflects a practical understanding of the needs of vulnerable populations, particularly women, children, and the elderly.

It noted that her interventions have also strengthened advocacy for inclusive governance and participatory development processes within local communities across the state.

Bassey said the Union recognises the significance of sustained humanitarian engagement in bridging gaps left by institutional limitations in public service delivery.

He added that Otu’s initiatives have helped reduce social inequality by extending targeted support to individuals often excluded from mainstream development programmes.

The NUJ reiterated its commitment to responsible journalism, noting that it will continue to highlight initiatives that positively impact society and promote human development.

The Union further commended the First Lady for maintaining consistency in service delivery despite economic challenges affecting social intervention programmes nationwide.

It said her resilience and dedication have set a benchmark for public office holders and spouses of political leaders across the country.

The statement acknowledged that the First Lady’s efforts have attracted recognition beyond Cross River State, positioning her as a respected humanitarian voice nationally.

Bassey also used the occasion to call for increased support from stakeholders, development partners, and civil society organisations to scale up her interventions.

He stressed that collaborative efforts would further expand the reach and sustainability of humanitarian programmes across underserved communities in the state.

The NUJ chairman said the Union remains optimistic that Otu will continue to build on her achievements and deepen her impact in the years ahead.

He expressed confidence that her leadership within the humanitarian space would inspire more inclusive and people-centered development initiatives across the region.

The Union prayed for divine guidance, strength, and wisdom for the First Lady as she continues to serve humanity through her programmes.

It also wished her good health and longevity to sustain her ongoing contributions to social welfare and community development efforts.

Observers note that the celebration reflects broader recognition of the role played by non-state actors in complementing government-led development initiatives.

They argue that partnerships between government institutions and humanitarian actors remain critical to addressing multidimensional poverty challenges in Nigeria.

Analysts further suggest that sustained media attention on such initiatives could enhance accountability and encourage replication of successful intervention models nationwide.

The NUJ concluded that Otu’s legacy of service continues to resonate with citizens, particularly those directly impacted by her humanitarian programmes.

The Union reaffirmed its support for initiatives that promote social justice, equity, and improved living standards for all residents of Cross River State.
