The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has confirmed that its official website has been hacked, urging the public to disregard any reports or messages published on the site.

In a statement released Wednesday night via its official X account (formerly Twitter), the bureau assured citizens that efforts to regain control of the website are ongoing. The NBS stated:

“This is to inform the public that the NBS website has been hacked, and we are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you.”

The announcement follows a series of significant reports recently attributed to the bureau. On December 16, 2024, the NBS reported that Nigeria’s headline inflation rate for November 2024 had risen to 34.60%, a marginal increase from October’s 33.88%.

Just a day later, the agency reportedly disclosed that over ₦2.23 trillion was paid in ransom to kidnappers between May 2023 and April 2024. This was followed by the release of the crime Experience and Security Perception Survey 2024 on December 17, which claimed that over 25 million mobile phones were stolen in Nigeria between March 2023 and April 2024.

The NBS has not revealed when or how the website was compromised. However, it reassured the public that stringent measures are being implemented to restore the platform’s integrity.

Further updates on the situation are expected in the coming days.
