Professor Edoba Omoregie, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has expressed concerns over the state of facilities in the institution, just 24 hours after resuming office.
Omoregie, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and professor of private property law, took over from Professor Lilian Salami on December 2, 2024.
During his inspection of facilities, including hostels and lecture halls, Omoregie described the condition of many hostels as unacceptable.
He acknowledged that a lot of work is needed to make the hostels more habitable.
Despite the challenges posed by paucity of funds, Omoregie assured that he would reach out to stakeholders to provide modern facilities.
The new VC emphasized that his administration would be students-centered, prioritizing their welfare and comfort.
He noted that as a former student of the university, he is committed to making a positive impact on the institution.
Omoregie’s predecessor, Professor Lilian Salami, had also faced similar challenges during her tenure.
Salami, despite these challenges, was able to deliver on her nine-point agenda, significantly improving infrastructure facilities and addressing the ratio of non-teaching staff to teaching staff.
