Prominent Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has warned that hunger and poverty are being used as tools to weaken citizens and limit their ability to hold leaders accountable.
In a message shared on social media platform X, Ms Yesufu said widespread hunger across the country has left many people focused on daily survival, with little energy or space to engage in political or civic matters.
She argued that prolonged economic hardship has reduced the capacity of many Nigerians to think critically, describing poverty as a condition that has deeply damaged society.
Ms Yesufu said those who are not struggling to meet basic needs have a responsibility to speak and act on behalf of people who are no longer able to do so.
“Hunger that is deliberately inflicted has made many lose their capacity to think,” she said, adding that poverty has become deeply rooted in the country.
The activist accused Nigeria’s political leadership of maintaining conditions of poverty while offering temporary relief, particularly during election periods. She said such measures are short-term and often aimed at winning votes rather than solving long-standing economic problems.
Ms Yesufu called on economically stable Nigerians to come together and serve as what she described as the conscience of the nation, urging them to take a clear stand on the country’s future.
She said Nigeria has the resources needed to succeed but must confront hunger and revive the nation’s sense of purpose and resilience.
Her comments come amid growing concern over rising food prices, increasing poverty levels, and ongoing economic hardship across Nigeria.
