The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a sweeping victory in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, winning five out of the six chairmanship positions across the councils.
Results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show that the APC dominated the polls in Bwari, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Kuje, Kwali, and Abaji, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinched victory in Gwagwalada.
According to the final outcomes, Hon. Joshua Ishaku of the APC emerged chairman-elect in Bwari Area Council, while Hon. Chris Garki (APC) won in AMAC. In Kuje, Hon. Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo of the APC was declared winner, alongside Hon. Nuhu Daniel Kwali (APC) in Kwali Area Council. In Abaji, Hon. Abdullahi Umar Abubakar (APC) secured the chairmanship seat.
The only upset for the ruling party came in Gwagwalada, where Hon. Kasim Mohammed of the PDP defeated the APC candidate to claim the council’s top seat.
The outcome consolidates the APC’s hold on grassroots governance within the FCT, giving the party control of the majority of the area councils. Political observers note that the results could have broader implications for party alignments and strategy ahead of future elections in the territory.
INEC had conducted the elections across the six area councils amid heightened political interest, with voter turnout and party mobilization playing key roles in determining the final results.
With the chairmanship contests concluded, attention is now expected to shift to the composition of councillorship seats and possible post-election reactions from stakeholders.
