Benin Traditional Council Clears Air on Peller’s Palace Visit, Says Entry Was Unauthorized

The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has firmly stated that TikTok personality Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, widely known as Peller, entered the palace of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, without official approval.

This clarification follows claims by Queen Ewaure, who had presented a letter bearing an acknowledgement stamp as proof that the visit was approved. The council, however, dismissed this interpretation, explaining that acknowledging a letter does not equate to granting permission.

According to a statement signed by the council’s Secretary, Frank Irabor, the stamp merely confirms receipt of correspondence and should not be mistaken for authorization.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the receipt and stamping of any correspondence only serve as acknowledgment and do not in any way imply approval by His Royal Majesty or the Benin Traditional Council,” the statement read.

The controversy has sparked public reactions, especially after disciplinary actions were taken against Queen Ewaure, a Benin chief, and a palace staff member over the incident.

Earlier, Peller’s management had claimed the visit was arranged through Uyiekpen Ogiefa, son of Chief Courage Uyi Ogiefa. They also maintained that any perceived misconduct during the visit was unintentional, attributing it to excitement and the warm reception received.

However, the council maintained its stance, emphasizing that without explicit authorization, no visit to the palace can be considered legitimate.

Irabor further challenged Peller and his team to publicly clarify whether they received any formal written approval for the visit, and whether their initial request included plans to meet with members of the royal household.

He added that disciplinary proceedings are already underway and confirmed that Peller has been invited to the palace for further engagement. Despite the public debate, the council made it clear it would not engage in media arguments over matters being handled internally.

The Benin Traditional Council concluded by reaffirming its commitment to preserving the customs, traditions, and sanctity of the royal palace.
