Delta Police Launch Probe Into Viral Assault on Women During Ozoro Festival

Authorities have launched an investigation following a viral video showing the alleged assault of women during a local festival in Ozoro.

The footage, which circulated widely on social media, sparked outrage as it showed groups of young men reportedly harassing women in public spaces, including forcefully tearing their clothes and subjecting them to abuse.

The incident is said to have occurred on March 19 during an annual community festival, where reports claim that women are traditionally expected to remain indoors. It was further alleged that any woman seen outside during the event becomes a target for harassment by participants.

There are also unverified claims that some victims may have suffered more serious forms of assault, although this has not been officially confirmed.

Reacting to the development, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, described the incident as “alarming, disgusting and embarrassing.”

He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter.

“The command condemns this in totality. No custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens,” he stated.

The police have assured the public that those responsible will be identified, arrested, and prosecuted. Residents and witnesses have also been urged to come forward with any useful information to support the ongoing investigation.
