A viral Instagram video published by a verified social media influencer and comedian, popularly known by the stage name “Ghana Must Go”, has triggered widespread public concern over the conduct of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, following allegations of a late night operation at hotels in the Duse area of Abuja.
In the video, which was reviewed by Truth Live News, Ghana Must Go alleged that EFCC operatives from the Wuse 2 unit carried out coordinated operations at AJ’s Hotel and Apartments and Nino Hotel between about 3am and 4am, using a master key obtained from hotel staff to gain access to guest rooms.
According to the comedian, operatives reportedly entered as many as 52 rooms, opening doors one after the other without prior notice to occupants. He claimed that families, married couples and other hotel guests were confronted while asleep, describing the operation as humiliating, traumatising and a serious breach of citizens’ rights to privacy and dignity.
He further criticised what he described as indiscriminate hotel raids rather than intelligence led and targeted investigations, warning that such practices undermine public confidence in law enforcement and expose innocent citizens to unnecessary distress.
Further investigations by Truth Live News revealed that about seven persons were arrested during the operation in the early hours of that morning. Multiple sources familiar with the incident confirmed that the individuals were allegedly moved to different locations across Abuja shortly after their arrest, where they were reportedly compelled to source and hand over money in United States dollars before being released.
Sources told Truth Live News that some of the individuals were taken to Bureau de Change operators and cash machines in order to withdraw and convert funds before securing their freedom.
In the same video, Ghana Must Go also alleged that operatives removed the hotel’s CCTV equipment following the raid, claiming this was done to prevent public scrutiny of their actions. He further accused some EFCC personnel of engaging in extortion and challenged the Chairman of the Commission to subject both himself and senior officers to an independent and transparent external audit.
The comedian also raised concerns over the economic impact of the operation on the affected hotels, stating that patronage reportedly dropped sharply after the incident, with some foreign guests said to have checked out immediately and cancelled future stays.
As at the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued any official statement in response to the allegations. Truth Live News notes that while the claims are serious and supported by multiple eyewitness accounts, the Commission has yet to publicly clarify the circumstances surrounding the operation.
Though all efforts by our correspondent to contact the media team of the commission have not been successful so far, however, we will continue to make effort to get their version of the story and also publish.
Meanwhile, the incident has reignited public debate on accountability, lawful enforcement procedures and the protection of fundamental human rights in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against financial crime.
