Emir Sanusi Returns to Classroom, Begins Law Degree at Northwest University, Kano

In a rare blend of royalty and academia, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has commenced lectures at Northwest University, Kano, after enrolling as a 200-level law student in the institution’s Faculty of Law.

The revered monarch joined fellow undergraduates on Tuesday, attending lectures quietly and without fanfare. Dressed in a black flowing outfit and his signature white turban, Emir Sanusi took a seat at the back of the classroom on a three-seater, attentively following the session alongside other students.

His appearance in the lecture hall followed a special admission offer granted by the university last week. Northwest University admitted the emir into its Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Common and Sharia Law, citing his vast experience in governance, economics, and public service as the basis for the decision.

University officials noted that the admission reflects the institution’s commitment to lifelong learning and intellectual excellence, regardless of status or position.

Established in 2012, Northwest University is one of the two universities owned by the Kano State Government and has steadily grown into a hub for legal and social science education in northern Nigeria.

Emir Sanusi II, a PhD holder and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), remains one of the country’s most influential public intellectuals. He is widely respected for his deep expertise in economics and finance, as well as his outspoken advocacy for education, social reform, and good governance.
