Eruku community in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State was thrown into panic on Sunday when four armed bandits stormed a farm and abducted a 40-year-old farmer, Annas Aasanru.
The attack, the second in one month, came barely a week after 38 church worshippers abducted from the same community regained freedom after five days in captivity. The released victims are still receiving medical attention from the state government.
A community leader, who spoke anonymously, said the attackers, suspected to be Fulani/Bororo men and armed with cutlasses and AK-47 rifles, invaded the farmland along the road leading to Koro and whisked away the victim into the bush.
Confirming the incident on Sunday in Ilorin, the Kwara State Police Command spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said:
“Police operatives from Eruku Division received a complaint at about 1400hours on Sunday that four armed men invaded a farm along Koro road, Eruku at about 1230hours and abducted one Mr Aasanru (m) aged 40.
“Upon receipt of the report, a joint team of police, military personnel and local vigilante members was immediately deployed to the area for an intensive search and rescue operation.”
The police command assured residents that all necessary efforts are underway to secure the safe return of the abducted farmer.
The latest incident has heightened fear among residents of Eruku and neighbouring communities, who now live in constant dread of fresh attacks.
