House Of Reps Constitution Review Zonal Hearing Set For Calabar

CROSS RIVER, CALABAR – The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has announced a zonal hearing to be held in Calabar, as part of its nationwide constitutional review exercise.

According to a press release signed by Linus Obogo, Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor of Cross River State, the Calabar hearing is part of efforts to deepen constitutional democracy in Nigeria.

“The exercise is designed to foster inclusive dialogue and capture the aspirations of Nigerians across all regions,” the statement read, highlighting the committee’s commitment to broad-based consultation.

The Calabar Centre, officially designated as Centre B, will host representatives and stakeholders from Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States. The hearing is scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Transcorp (Metropolitan) Hotel, Calabar.

Obogo noted that the hearing will “serve as a platform for citizens to contribute to the ongoing efforts at refining the nation’s legal and institutional framework,” underscoring the participatory nature of the review.

He called on civil society groups, professional bodies, traditional rulers, and other interest blocs to join the engagement, which he described as “a landmark step towards a more just, equitable, and responsive Nigerian Constitution.”

The decision to hold the hearing in Calabar positions Cross River State at the centre of national dialogue and reform, reaffirming its strategic importance in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.
