Nigeria’s former President Goodluck Jonathan and the country’s governors have paid tribute to the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who has died after collapsing in his office in the state capital, Yenagoa.
Recall that Truthlive news had reported that, the 60-year-old deputy governor slumped on Thursday afternoon, 11 December 2025, while preparing for an official meeting. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Despite efforts by medical personnel to revive him, he was pronounced dead later that day.
In a statement, Mr Jonathan said he was deeply shocked by the death, describing Senator Ewhrudjakpo as a devoted public servant, a patriot and a loyal servant of Bayelsa State and Nigeria.
He said the late deputy governor served the public with passion and distinction throughout his career, earning respect for his commitment and pursuit of knowledge.
“From his time as a commissioner, to his service in the Senate, and later as deputy governor, he was known for his deep understanding of governance, eloquence and warm sense of humour,” Mr Jonathan said.
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), which represents the 36 state governors, also expressed sadness over the loss. In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Strategic Communications, Abdullahi Yunusa Tanko, the forum described Senator Ewhrudjakpo as a dedicated and visionary leader who served his state with commitment.
The NGF added that his values and approach to public service would leave a lasting impression on colleagues and associates.
Former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, who worked closely with the late deputy governor for many years, described him as a rare combination of competence, intellect, loyalty and selflessness.
“He lived a simple life but made a profound impact,” Mr Dickson said, adding that Senator Ewhrudjakpo was emotionally mature, principled and formidable in intellect.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes across Bayelsa State and beyond, with many leaders remembering him for his service and personal integrity.
