Makinde Defies Calls for Postponement, Proceeds with Coronation

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is set to proceed with the coronation of newly elevated traditional rulers in Ibadan despite indications that the affected high chiefs may not attend the ceremony.

The event, scheduled to hold at Mapo Hall, will see the formal presentation of staff of office to prominent Ibadan chiefs recently elevated to crown-wearing Obas.

Among those expected to be crowned are Sharafadeen Alli, alongside Bolaji Adewoyin and Kola Babalola, following their promotion within the Ibadan traditional hierarchy. Their elevation marks a significant shift in status, granting them full recognition as monarchs within the traditional council.

However, multiple sources indicate that the ceremony may proceed without the physical presence of the newly elevated chiefs. Reports suggest that one of them is currently abroad for medical treatment, another is engaged in official duties outside the state, while others have cited short notice as a reason for their absence.

A source familiar with the development disclosed that the affected chiefs had formally communicated their unavailability and requested a postponement of the ceremony.

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, confirmed that the chiefs would not be present, noting that their absence had already been conveyed to the state government.

“The concerned high chiefs informed me that they would not be available and requested that the ceremony be postponed,” he said.

Despite this, the state government has maintained that the coronation will go ahead as planned. The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs insisted that all necessary arrangements had been concluded, emphasizing that public announcements would not have been made if the event was to be cancelled.

Officials also reiterated that the exercise is part of the administration’s broader effort to strengthen traditional institutions and preserve cultural heritage across the state.

Meanwhile, authorities have dismissed speculation of any rift between Governor Makinde and the Olubadan, describing such claims as unfounded. A statement from the monarch’s palace clarified that there is no disagreement between both parties regarding the coronation process.

The development adds a new layer of complexity to the evolving situation within Ibadan’s traditional leadership structure, particularly as discussions continue around timing, procedure, and broader political implications.
