Nasarawa LGA Secretary Sacked Over Social Media Posts

The Secretary to Keffi Local Government Council (LGC) in Nasarawa State, Ibrahim Bala, has been dismissed from his position over alleged unethical social media activity and disrespect to authority.

The decision was announced by the Executive Chairman of the council, Idris Ahmed Damagani, in a letter signed by the Director of Administration, Usman Zubairu Egya.

According to the letter, Bala was queried over his conduct but failed to provide a satisfactory response. The council cited threats against the executive chairman, disrespect towards elders and stakeholders, and “unethical social media posts” capable of disrupting peace within the local government and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party.

The letter stated: “Your social media utterances are unethical, worrisome and capable of truncating peaceful coexistence in our LGA and our great APC party. Your disrespect to constituted authority, elders and stakeholders is unbearable. Hence, you are hereby ceased, relinquished and terminated from the position of Secretary to Keffi LGC.”

The move reflects growing concerns about the responsible use of social media by public officials, and the impact of online behaviour on governance and community relations.

The decision comes amid a broader national debate over online conduct by public officials and citizens in Nigeria.

In recent years, authorities have taken a more active stance on social media behaviour.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore was taken to court in Abuja over online posts in which he described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal,” with the Department of State Services accusing him of cyberstalking and defamation under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act.

The Nigerian government has also taken wider action against online content it views as harmful. In 2025, authorities closed more than 13 million social media accounts and removed nearly 60 million posts for allegedly violating guidelines aimed at tackling offensive content.
