Nigerian Senate Slams Anti-Nigerian Protests in Ghana, Urges African Unity

The Nigerian Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations has strongly condemned recent anti-Nigerian protests in Ghana, labeling them “deeply disturbing” and a threat to the spirit of African brotherhood.

The condemnation follows a viral social media video showing Ghanaians protesting and demanding the expulsion of Nigerians, accusing them of violating local cultural and societal norms.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Committee emphasized the historic bond between Nigeria and Ghana, both key members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). “The two countries must keep the flame of brotherhood alive,” the statement read, urging mutual respect and cooperation to uphold ECOWAS principles of peace, unity, and regional integration.

The Committee praised the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), led by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, for their swift and diplomatic response to the situation and also commended the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners for their joint efforts in de-escalating tensions and restoring calm.

Reassuring Nigerians in Ghana, the Committee noted that authorities from both nations are actively communicating to protect the rights and welfare of Nigerian citizens. It expressed solidarity with “every law-abiding Nigerian in Ghana” and called for calm while diplomatic channels address the issue.

The Committee further urged Nigerians in Ghana to remain law-abiding, avoid provocative rhetoric, and promote peace and harmony. “Both nations have a shared history and mutual interests that must not be undermined by isolated incidents,” the statement concluded, reinforcing the need for continued collaboration to strengthen bilateral ties.
