Former Nigerian presidential candidate Peter Obi has denied reports suggesting he is joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a live discussion on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday night, Mr Obi said he has no need to formally join the party because he has been part of the ADC-led coalition since its formation.
“I am not joining ADC. I can’t re-join what I am already a part of,” he said, stressing that his involvement with the coalition dates back to its earliest days.
Mr Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, also dismissed claims that other political figures were stepping aside for him within the ADC. According to him, members of the coalition have agreed to work collectively without personal ambitions overriding the group’s goals.
“Nobody is stepping down for me in ADC,” he said. “We have all agreed to work together.”
The former Anambra State governor also used the opportunity to reaffirm his respect for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, describing him as a leader he continues to hold in high regard.
“Atiku remains my respected leader,” Mr Obi added.
Speculation about Mr Obi’s political future has intensified in recent months as opposition parties explore possible alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.
