The Edo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the state government have locked horns over Governor Monday Okpebholo’s proposed plan to launch Edo Air, the state’s own airline.
The PDP, in a statement by state Publicity Secretary, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, Esq., chided the idea as a “misplaced priority” and proof of a government “profoundly disconnected” from Edo’s pressing issues.
The party further claimed that floating an airtime “At a time when Edo State is grappling with decaying infrastructure, worsening urban conditions, and stalled strategic projects, the idea of establishing an airline is not only unrealistic but profoundly insensitive
The PDP further claimed the plan is “unrealistic” and “insensitive” amid Edo’s crumbling infrastructure and urban decay.
”Running an airline is capital-intensive, technically demanding, and historically disastrous for most sub-national governments in Nigeria,” they argued.
In a swift reaction by the state government, through its Chief Press Secretary Dr. Patrick Ebojele, described the opposition’s party’s attacks as short-sighted and counterproductive, arguing that the focus should be on results rather than partisan rhetoric.
“Edo Air is not a political gimmick; it is a developmental project aimed at benefiting all Edo people. “
The Edo Air, he said, is part of Governor Okpebholo’s “clear vision for economic growth, connectivity, and regional development.
”Edo Air will improve intra-state and inter-state travel, boost tourism, facilitate trade, and attract investors, creating new opportunities and jobs for Edo residents,” Ebojele said.
