Power generation companies in Nigeria have called for greater public awareness about electricity meter testing, certification and compliance monitoring.
The appeal was made by the head of the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC), Dr Joy Ogaji, during a visit to the headquarters of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) in Abuja.
Dr Ogaji said improving public understanding of the agency’s work would help encourage compliance with electricity standards and promote more efficient use of power across the country.
She praised NEMSA for its role in regulating technical standards within Nigeria’s electricity sector. The agency is responsible for inspecting electrical installations and ensuring that electricity meters and related equipment meet required safety and operational standards.
According to Dr Ogaji, these functions are essential for maintaining the safety, reliability and long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.
She also suggested regular collaboration between NEMSA and power generation companies to improve coordination and knowledge sharing across the sector.
Responding to the visit, NEMSA’s managing director, Engr Olusegun Adesayo, welcomed the proposal and said the agency was ready to strengthen cooperation with industry stakeholders.
Mr Adesayo said closer collaboration would help ensure strict compliance with electrical standards, improve operational safety and enhance service delivery across Nigeria’s power supply chain.
He added that effective inspection, testing and certification of electrical equipment are crucial for protecting lives and property while supporting the development of a stronger electricity system in the country.
