Red Cross Sues For Improved Commitments To Bridge Yawning Gaps In Humanitarian Service In Edo

Lucky Obukohwo, Reporting

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Edo State Branch, has sued for more commitments from well meaning Nigerians to bridge the yawning gaps in humanitarian service to the vulnerable in the state.

Chairman of the branch, Pastor Monday Edogiawerie made the call at the 2026 Edo branch Governance and Management Retreat held in Benin.

He said the humanitarian need of the people are increasing astronomically by the day due to one natural disaster or the other and the means to meet them are limited, which gives room for more spirited individuals to show commitments in order to put smiles on their faces.

“At this point, I humbly appeal for sustained and increased support from our benefactors, partners, and well-meaning individuals.

“The humanitarian needs in Edo State are enormous, and we cannot do it alone. We call on corporate organizations, government agencies, philanthropists, and community leaders to partner with us in expanding our reach and deepening our impact.

“Let us remember that every contribution — whether financial, material, or technical — translates into hope for a vulnerable family, relief for disaster victims, and empowerment for our youth volunteers”, Edogiawerie said.

Edogiawerie, while admonishing members of the Red Cross to embrace modern days technology, called on them to adhere to their statutes and policies.

“The humanitarian landscape is evolving. The needs in our communities are increasing. Climate-related disasters, public health concerns, and socio-economic vulnerabilities demand that we become more strategic, more innovative, and more united. This is therefore a call to renewed commitment.

“We must strengthen governance by ensuring transparency, accountability, and adherence to our statutes and policies.

“We must enhance management efficiency by building capacity, improving coordination, and embracing technology where necessary.

“We must invest intentionally in youth leadership and volunteer retention to secure the future of our branch”, Edogiawerie added.

On the part of the state secretary of the association, Mr. Wilson Ekhomogiazin, while commending the Edo state governor, Monday Okpebholo for what he is doing in the state, appealed to him to release subvention to the Red Cross so that they can extend their reach to the vulnerable persons across the 18 local government areas of the state.
