Sanwo-Olu Approves N50,000 Wage Award for Lagos State Public Sector Workers

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu has officially approved a N50,000 wage award for all public sector workers in Lagos State for the month of May 2026.

This announcement was made today, Friday, May 1, 2026, during the International Workers’ Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan.

The Governor, who was represented at the event by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, explained that the additional payment is intended to serve as a relief package to cushion the impact of the rising cost of living and current economic pressures, including high fuel prices.

The bonus applies to all state employees across all grade levels, including teachers, healthcare personnel, and civil servants, and will be added to their May salary payments.

During the commemoration, the Governor acknowledged the critical role workers play in the state’s development, describing them as the backbone of Lagos and the “living infrastructure” that keeps the system functioning despite prevailing challenges.

He highlighted that while the state government is aware of the difficulties regarding housing and transportation, efforts are ongoing to expand rail infrastructure and provide affordable housing through the state’s rent-to-own schemes.

While this N50,000 award is specifically designated for May, the state government noted that the measure remains subject to further review in the coming months.

In response to the announcement, organized labour leaders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chairperson for Lagos, Agnes Funmi Sessi, commended the gesture but urged the government to consider a more permanent review of the minimum wage to better match the current inflation rate and the high cost of living in the commercial hub.
