UK Invites Nigerian Innovators to Apply for €827,000 Digital, AI Energy Challenge

The United Kingdom has called on innovators and small and medium-sized enterprises across Africa, including Nigeria, to apply for the 2026 Digital Energy Challenge. The announcement was made on Monday 4th April via the UK in Nigeria’s official X handle.

The challenge, co-funded by the UK and the European Union, targets digital and AI-enabled solutions that can increase energy access, support the energy transition, and improve the operational efficiency of electricity utilities across Africa.

A total budget of €827,000 will be allocated to selected projects to develop, test, and implement innovative digital and AI-enabled solutions, with grants covering costs for equipment, software, products or services, and training, as well as expert support for project management.

The programme is open for applications in two categories: a Tech Accelerator for innovative digital projects in one of 51 specified countries in Africa, and a Partnership for a collaborative project in Nigeria, developed with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.

Beyond funding, selected winners will receive expert support and bootcamp sessions for hands-on guidance, sector insights, and collaboration opportunities between project winners and African utilities, as well as visibility and networking through communication campaigns and access to the Digital Energy Community.

With around 90 million people lacking reliable electricity in Nigeria, the embassy noted that the initiative offers a unique opportunity to test solutions in real-world conditions and demonstrate scalability across the continent.

While companies from around the world are invited to apply, proposals from local African companies are strongly encouraged and will receive favourable consideration.
Applications opened on April 20 and close on June 17, 2026.
