Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to stay positive and courageous, and not to give up on the goal of building a prosperous and strong nation, despite the challenges the country faces.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, Jonathan emphasized the importance of strengthening democracy and fostering free, fair, and credible elections.
He acknowledged Nigeria’s achievements since 1960, highlighting progress in various areas despite significant obstacles. He also recognized the current challenges facing the country that need urgent attention.
“Today marks an important moment in our history as we celebrate the 64th Anniversary of our independence and honor those who fought to end colonial rule,” Jonathan stated.
He noted that since 1999, Nigeria has enjoyed 25 years of sustained democracy in the Fourth Republic, following the end of military rule. Jonathan also pointed to growth in the economy and Gross Domestic Product (GDP), as well as the country’s ongoing unity and belief in its shared values.
However, he acknowledged that Nigeria still struggles with major issues, including security, economic growth, national unity, and infrastructure development.
To address these, Jonathan called for stronger institutions and a culture of democracy that promotes peaceful, transparent, and fair elections, as the foundation for good governance, national unity, and peace.
He encouraged Nigerians to recommit to justice, equity, and inclusion, and to make the most of the country’s diversity, youth potential, and natural resources.
“On this special day, I urge Nigerians to stay hopeful, resilient, and dedicated to our nation’s greatness. With shared purpose, determination, and love for one another, we can overcome our challenges and create the prosperous nation we all dream of, where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed,” Jonathan said.
