Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, Nigeria’s oldest Catholic priest, has passed away at the age of 104.
The Diocese of Auchi in Edo State confirmed his death in a statement issued by Bishop Gabriel G. Dunia.
According to the statement, Oleghe died peacefully at about 2:30 am on November 24, 2024. Bishop Dunia wrote:
“With gratitude to God for a life well lived on earth, I hereby inform you of the passage of the Rt. Rev. MSGR Thomas Oleghe, the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria, to the great beyond at about 2:30 am this morning. May his lovely and gentle soul continue to rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
Oleghe, who was a member of the Diocese of Auchi, was known for his dedicated service and transformative contributions to the Church. He served in various parishes, including St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Igarra, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, where he introduced reforms that contributed to the church’s growth and prominence.
The Diocese announced that his funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, as the Catholic community mourns the loss of one of its most respected figures.
