The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has extended an invitation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to tour its rehabilitated refineries, addressing his doubts about the effectiveness of the $2 billion spent on the facilities.
Obasanjo, in a recent interview, expressed skepticism about the state of Nigeria’s refineries, referencing longstanding issues encountered during his administration. He questioned the viability of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries despite significant investments.
“I was told not too long ago that over $2 billion has been squandered on the refineries, and they still do not work. If anyone tells you now that they are functional, why are we still depending on Aliko Dangote’s refinery? Dangote will not only make his refinery work but also ensure it delivers,” Obasanjo remarked.
In response, Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC, acknowledged Obasanjo’s stature and contributions while highlighting the company’s progress.
“We hold President Olusegun Obasanjo in the highest regard as a statesman who has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s development. His observations are deeply respected. However, NNPC has undergone a remarkable transformation,” Soneye said.
He emphasized that NNPC has transitioned from a loss-making enterprise to a profit-oriented global energy leader. Soneye explained that the refinery upgrades involve comprehensive overhauls to meet world-class standards, contrasting with the less impactful Turnaround Maintenance initiatives of the past.
Credit for the progress was attributed to the leadership of NNPC’s board, led by Group CEO Mele Kyari, and the transformative energy policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Extending an invitation to Obasanjo, Soneye added, “We warmly invite President Obasanjo to tour the rehabilitated refineries. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his guidance. This visit will provide an opportunity to witness the progress achieved under NNPC Limited’s leadership.”
NNPC’s statement underscores its commitment to transparency and operational efficiency as it continues to position itself as a global energy leader.
