Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has accused President Bola Tinubu of using “false statistics” to cover up Nigeria’s deepening economic crisis.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Obi criticised Tinubu for what he described as a pattern of presenting misleading data on key economic indicators, including unemployment, inflation and gross domestic product (GDP).

Obi recalled that during the 2023 election campaign, Tinubu mocked his data-driven approach to governance. “In November 2022, while campaigning in Delta State, Tinubu said he was ashamed to call my name and asked, ‘Na statistics we go chop?’” Obi wrote.

“Now, two years into his four-year tenure, Nigeria is ranked among the hungriest nations in the world, with millions unsure of where their next meal will come from,” he added.

The former Anambra State governor said governance demands “sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity and compassion,” insisting that Nigerians deserve honesty about the country’s economic realities.
