A socio-political support group, Obidients for Asue Ighodalo, has pledged to mobilize over 150,000 votes for Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the upcoming Edo State Governorship election.
The announcement was made during a symposium held along Airport Road in Benin City.
The group, which emerged from the supporters of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi during the last presidential election, emphasized their commitment to candidates with integrity, competence, and a reputable character, rather than allegiance to any political party.
This was echoed by the group’s co-convener, Austin Isikhuemen, who lauded the attendees as advocates of good governance.
Isikhuemen explained that Obidients for Asue Ighodalo was formed to ensure that Edo State benefits from competent leadership that can build on the progress made by the incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki.
He praised Dr. Ighodalo for meeting the group’s criteria, which include competence, empathy, integrity, and a forward-thinking approach to youth and education issues.
In his response, the PDP governorship candidate, Dr. Ighodalo, thanked members of the group, noting, “I can’t really describe how I feel. I feel overwhelmed and I feel humbled. You people have started a change in Nigeria. What many of us have been saying for a long time has started. This revolution will change Nigeria. That revolution is going to be difficult, there are going to be landmines on your way, people are going to hurt you, people are going to despise you but you must truly stand for what you believe in.”
“Edo State is your second true test because the core of what you stand for has been tested. The Obidients said we stand for fairness, equity and justice. For the first time the garden of Eden in cross temptation is being put in your way. There is a difference between Obidients and Labour and that confusion is playing out already.
“Are you JEF or LP, if you are JEF then you have the character, the capability and your decision is not difficult. Those who are confused are the ones that your people are doing, and the minute you start dangling here and there, you lose. So this is your first true test and you must win.”
Professor Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr., a keynote speaker at the event, endorsed Dr. Ighodalo, highlighting his credibility and noting that even Peter Obi acknowledged Ighodalo’s qualifications over the Labour Party candidate.
Prominent figures at the event included Edo State Deputy Governor Engr. Godwins Marvelous Omobayo, Edo State Commissioner for Art and Culture Dr. Uyi Malaika, and the Director General of the Edo State PDP Governorship Campaign Council, Hon. Matthew Idueyekemwen. Professor Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr., a keynote speaker, endorsed Dr. Ighodalo, highlighting his credibility and alignment with the group’s values.
