The Bauchi State Police command has rescued the Chief Imam of Ghalli Mosque, Alhaji Isah Jaja from the hands of irate worshippers

He was said to have made uncomplimentary remarks against a renowned Islamic scholar who died recently.

The state police command announced the development on its Facebook wall on Saturday morning, saying the man, Alhaji Isah Jaja, the Chief Imam of Ghalli Mosque, made the comments in his sermon during the Jumat service in the Bauchi metropolis.

He was said to have cast aspersions on the late Malam Idris Abdulazeez Dutsen-Tanshi, an Islamic scholar who died on Thursday after returning from India and the comments were said to have generated anger among the followers of the scholar, leading to an unrest within the premises of the mosque.

Following the unrest generated and the planned violence, the command deployed a team of Tactical Unit led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Dutsen-Tanshi police station who rushed to the scene and dispersed the angry worshippers “peacefully and professionally.”

They thereafter rescued the Chief Imam and took him into protective custody while the State Investigation Department (SID) had been tasked to investigate the matter.

The command added that normalcy had been restored to the metropolis while also warning religious leaders to be careful of their utterances and help in fostering the environment of peace and harmony.
