The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), backed by Nyesom Wike, has declared that the party has regained stability following weeks of internal crisis, as preparations intensify for its upcoming national convention.
Speaking during the party’s 107th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the Chairman of the National Caretaker Working Committee, Abdulrahman Mohammed, said the party had made “significant progress” in rebuilding its structure despite lingering tensions and legal disputes.
According to him, recent ward, state, and zonal congresses were largely successful, helping to restore confidence within the party.
“There is no victor and no vanquished—only a shared commitment to rebuild and strengthen the party,” he stated.
The PDP is set to hold its national convention on March 29 and 30, a key event expected to determine the party’s leadership direction ahead of future elections.
Despite the positive tone, the NEC meeting underscored the fragile balance within the party following months of factional disagreements and court battles.
Mohammed urged members to prioritise unity and avoid actions that could deepen divisions.
Similarly, the Chairman of the PDP Board of
Trustees, Mao Ohuabunwa, described the period as critical, calling on party stakeholders to embrace reconciliation and collective responsibility.
He also highlighted the importance of the party’s ongoing electronic membership registration, noting that it would strengthen internal democracy and transparency.
The PDP has been grappling with a prolonged leadership crisis since late 2025, with rival factions emerging after a controversial convention in Ibadan.
A Court of Appeal ruling earlier in March nullified that convention, further deepening divisions within the party. However, the current leadership insists reconciliation efforts are underway.
As the convention approaches, party leaders maintain that unity will be key to positioning the PDP as a strong opposition force.
“Nigeria is watching. We must rise above personal interests and focus on the future of the party,” Ohuabunwa said.
