Atiku’s Son Resigns as Commissioner From Fintiri’s Cabinet

Alhaji Adamu Atiku Abubakar, the first son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned his position as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State, stepping down from the cabinet of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri after two terms in office.

The resignation was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Abdulaziz Jauro, and came after deep personal reflection and careful consideration of his future political and professional path.

In his resignation letter, Adamu conveyed appreciation to Governor Fintiri for the confidence reposed in him during his tenure, describing his service as commissioner as an honour of immense significance. He also thanked his father for his moral support and blessings throughout his time in office.

The former commissioner further commended the permanent secretaries, directors, engineers, and all ministry staff for their dedication to infrastructural development across the state.

The resignation comes against the backdrop of a significant political shift in Adamawa State, as Adamu had declined to defect to the All Progressives Congress alongside Governor Fintiri. He was notably absent from the group of 22 commissioners who accompanied the governor to announce their switch from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC on February 27, 2026.

While Adamu has yet to officially declare his next political party, sources close to him suggest he may be eyeing higher political office. Though reports indicate a possible governorship ambition, insiders say Atiku may have endorsed him for a senatorial bid.

Adamu, on his part, maintained that his resignation does not in any way signal a withdrawal from public life but opens new doors for continued engagement in the development of Adamawa State.
