The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving its lingering internal crisis, announcing that reconciliation efforts are now underway following weeks of tension within the party.
In a press briefing delivered on Wednesday, the party disclosed that its reconciliation initiative was initiated in compliance with the advisory of the Court of Appeal Ibadan Division, which urged disputing parties to pursue dialogue in order to preserve unity and ensure the PDP remains a viable platform for aspirants ahead of forthcoming elections.
According to the statement, the party’s Board of Trustees, under the leadership of Adolphus Wabara, constituted a high-powered committee tasked with engaging aggrieved members and resolving outstanding disputes threatening party cohesion.
As a demonstration of goodwill, the National Working Committee (NWC) postponed its previously scheduled National Executive Committee and National Caucus meetings, while also toning down confrontational public communications. However, the PDP expressed concern over what it described as a lack of reciprocal restraint, noting that “hurtful rhetoric” and “derogatory statements” have continued from opposing quarters.
Despite these setbacks, the party struck an optimistic tone, revealing that leaders from both factions have “broken the ice” and are actively exploring pathways toward a lasting resolution. It appealed to supporters across the country to de-escalate tensions and avoid actions that could undermine ongoing peace efforts.
The PDP further assured its aspirants of its readiness to participate fully in upcoming elections, pledging to field candidates for all elective positions in accordance with its constitution. It also appreciated Nigerians who have continued to register with the party through its e-platform, noting that public confidence in the PDP remains strong despite internal challenges.
Reiterating its role in Nigeria’s democratic landscape, the party described itself as the country’s “only surviving legacy party” with a track record of 16 years in power, pledging to continue serving as a credible opposition force committed to accountability and democratic consolidation.
The statement also called on those in positions of authority to remain accountable to the will of the people, emphasizing that sovereignty ultimately resides with citizens.
In a show of internal solidarity, the NWC passed a unanimous vote of confidence on Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, commending their resilience and leadership amid recent party challenges.
The briefing, signed by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, National Chairman of the PDP, concluded with a strong assurance that the party remains united, functional, and prepared to offer Nigerians a credible platform in the forthcoming elections.
