The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, held a closed door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Thursday, a development that has stirred political speculation as opposition parties intensify consultations ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a post on his official X handle, Obi confirmed the meeting, where he described Jonathan as an “elder brother, statesman, and leader.” He noted that their discussions centred on “the state of our dear nation,” but did not give further details on whether they had any discussions on the forthcoming 2027 elections.
The private meeting comes at a time when both politicians are being courted by different political parties. While Jonathan is allegedly being wooed by some stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obi recently aligned himself with a new opposition coalition through the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform.
Many Nigerian political enthusiasts see the Abuja meeting as a possible indication of moves toward a broad opposition coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. However, sources claim Jonathan’s camp has been lobbying Obi to step down for the former president, while others believe Jonathan may be considering a direct bid for the presidency.
Meanwhile, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has publicly cautioned against presenting either Jonathan or Obi as the PDP’s flagbearer, saying such a move could trigger internal crises within the party.
