President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign by 31 March 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) on Tuesday.
The directive covers a wide range of presidential appointees, including ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, chief executive officers of federal agencies, commissions, and government-owned companies, as well as other political appointees.
The circular, signed by SGF Sen. George Akume and issued by Permanent Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, noted that resignations must be submitted through the SGF’s office by the deadline.
According to the statement, the measure is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and INEC’s timetable for party primaries. President Tinubu said the move is intended to ensure compliance with electoral laws, maintain transparency, and provide a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections.
Officials affected by the directive have been urged to take full note and comply strictly, with the president reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible elections in Nigeria.
